European Working Conditions Survey - EWCS

The European Working Conditions Survey is a large-scale, European cross-national, longitudinal survey research programme and is designed to investigate and describe working conditions, the extent of and changes in the workforce and the quality of work.

1. Survey type

  • Cross-national
  • Longitudinal, with waves in 1991, 1996, 2000/2001 and 2005
  • Representative national samples, ≥ 15 years of age
  • Single core questionnaire (no varying modules, but the extent of the questionnaire enlarges with every wave)

2. Participating countries

  • 12 to 31 countries, depending on wave:
    • 1991 wave: EU 12 
      Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom
    • 1996 wave: EU 15 
      Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom
    • 2000 wave: EU 15 
      Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom
    • 2001 wave: 10 EU candidate countries 
      Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia
    • 2005 wave: EU 27 and Croatia, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey 
      Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom

7. Online data analysis

Online production of tables, without registration, free of charge, per country and pooled, from EurLIFE. This web tabulator function of EurLIFE does not cover the entire EWCS dataset. In addition to EWCS, the EurLIFE tabulator also uses data from other surveys like the European Quality of Life Survey or Eurobarometer. Which data are used depends on the indicators selected for tabulation.
